ET Virus (Or cover up story for manmade one) that re animates the dead. The virus becomes the new consciousness that re animates the vacant corpses and the consciousness of the virus is non stop feeding or consuming. It is the nature of any virus. How complex or conscious the virus would be something that would determine the zombie's speed and strength. The virus might also soften the bodies back up so that movement is not like zombies of yesteryear,  but more like the fast running, and even jumping zombies of more modern films.
Because the virus is a consciousness much akin to us, the brain would be the interconnect as it were, so shots to the head kill. No brain, no go. Of course burning the bodies would be a smart move. For infection and for the security that nothing will come back.

I would assume infection would follow disease protocol, and certain genetic groups would be easily vulnerable or it would appear airborn to them, while some with resistance or stronger immune systems that make actual contact for infection necessary, even to the point that actual liquid or blood transfer must take place, ala bites infect, but the airborn capability is rather defeated in some groups. And of course there would be those with immunity. Natural and man made of course.

 AK, you just made my paranoia kick in. Not sayin it'll happen just what if..

 (First of all anyone who's played DOOM knows that messin' with the moons of Mars is bad medicine)

 What if the Phobos-Grunt mission brings back the samples as planned. Everthing goes fine until they discover a virus, which of course turns people into zombies. All is well with the studies until December 21 of that year when an infected subject breaks free, solidifying the Mayan calendar and destroying the Earth. I think I need to stock up a little more.

Im guessing it will definatly have something to do with the government. We all do. All the diseases and viruses and crap these people are working on. Its some straight up bad ju-ju man. I'm in the genetic modification camp. Eventually, someone is going to figure out how to make them, and will most likely use them as troops. Except it doesn't work as planned.

I'm agreeing with CrimsonKing... it will be government... it could be looking for the cancer cure, or bringing people back to life, or it could be anything but the government will be involved with it...
