So I recently opened my eyes to the imminent threat of a zompocalypse, and realised that my nice 32 acre country home was not zombie proof!  As beautiful as it was, a horde would be able to break through many windows and glass doors.  Thankfully I moved into an in-city house.  I know many would say:  Well now you're in a city where the horde will be bigger!!!  It okay though, as I have the perfect house for this scenario:  I have a Zombie Shelter!

Of course, I tell the none-believers that its a storage room/bomb shelter.  It has two nice big lights, with a dozen replacement bulbs.  A solar-powered generator connected to the roof provides the room with virtually unlimited energy.  There is a fridge stocked with drinks and an electric cooking stove, along with over a year's supply of canned foods.  There are no windows, and the only door in is blocked by one of the heaviest wooden doors I have ever seen.  We keep our exercise equipment in there, such as a treadmill and a Bowflex home gym.  We don't put any weapons in there, in case of a burglary or something, but we have a shotgun, a hunting rifle with a scope (dont know specifics for either), two battle axes, three swords and a couple of crowbars.

So I wanna know what your zombie shelter is like, or what your plan is to survive once the zombies begin to walk.

Well, i don't exactly have a shelter cuz im only 17 and still live with my mom (don't laugh!) ive got two years of school left (failed, Still don't laugh!) so i can't really upgrade our house to shelter standards. So, me and a group of friends plan on moving in together so our bug out group will be together and we can all upgrade the place we'll be staying into a shelter. Also, if the outbreak is too big, then we are heading deep into some remote wilderness and living the lives of tree people or hermits or hobbits or whatever  Grin

Because I don't have a very defensible position, my shelter would be all those hidden places in the city that you sometimes stumble into. But again, because I'm not amazingly prepared, I'd be on the move alot. Within the city, but never in the same place twice in a row.

The house is built on the side of a hill, so on one side the foundation is 5 feet off the ground, with no windows on the low side. About the only entrance to worry about is the main door, I could take out the steps (leaving the bottom of the door about 2 feet high off the ground) to reduce the amount of leverage they would have to push against the door. I would also reinforce that door, the front door serve us getting in and out to gather supplies. Unless the zombies are Spider-man, after knocking out the front porch, it would be safe. I could sit out there, whittle myself a nice arrow shaft by hand to pass the time, place a stone or metal point on one end, nothing too fancy. Cut a nock in the other end, no need for varnish, it won't last that long, no need for feathers since it'll only fly about 2 feet when I lean over the banister to cull a zombie. Repeat until plague is over.

Raiders are about the only worry I really have, oh and the government that wants to put me in a nice little rescue station. I'd probably not have much to worry about from raiders. Most these people around here either know they are welcome to anything we've got if they ask for it, and the rogues know to have their affairs in order before they trespass here, same rules apply post zombocalypse. There's a place back in Stone Mountain that backs a cliff, it's state owned so construction is a no-no right now, but when TSHTF there's enough timber there to build an adequate fort that's pretty inaccessible and hidden away. (out of sight out of mind). I don't like to have a single, dead set plan since I don't know what everyone else is going to do. I learned long ago that if everyone has the same idea, it's probably a bad idea. I'd like to sit it out for a while, see what everyone else does, then do the opposite.

Like some of you guys said, I am too young to do any fortifying of my house. But I still have a plan. Our entire house is surrounded by a chain linked fence. That will hold them off while we prepare. It's only 4 feet high, so I don't expect it to hold off anything near a Class 2, but it's valuable time we will need. After the zombie sightings are confirmed (shouldn't be too hard) I'll have my mom or stepfather drive both vehicles up to the windows, both blocking them and creating an easy bug out strategy. After that, close off the chainlink fence, grab anything useful from the shed, and lock all the f***ing doors and windows. Next, I'd barricade, and after all defensive plans are laid out, weapons. I have a battle axe, two swords, and a survival knife. Now we retreat to the atic with all the food we have and fill all the containers (alot) with water. After 2 weeks, I'll attempt to contact friends and family close to me and head to Norfolk, VA where an Army Base is located.

I fear that my dream of building an underground home might not happen between now and the outbreak, I've got the property that's perfect for it, but currently no time, and not enough money..

Right now my Zombie shelter is a 280 square foot bunker with no windows, only one entrance (A steel door) with an opening for seeing who's there and a lower shooting port.

I've got a short wave radio, some canned food, a few guns, and rainwater collection and filtering system, a small cook stove and enough propane to last almost a year.

There are 2 bunk beds, and a kitchen table and 4 chairs. a composting toilet and a shower that can recycle the gray water back through a filtration system (seperate from the drinking filtration)

A couch is against one wall along with one of the bunkbeds.

There different lighting options, electric 12 volt lights, kerosene lamps, and a few propane lamps that can run off of the same big propane tank the stove does.

I wish that I could say I built this, or that it was intended for Zombies, but it's an old bomb shelter from the early 60's.

I've made a few upgrades (the composting toilet, and a small solar power system)

But other than the food, guns and furniture, it's pretty much as it was 45 years ago.

I have a basement I am proofing. It has trap door access which is nice. I need to finish the walls, put in an air filtering system, and get me some solar to run down there. Other than that it is perfect as there are no windows, it is about 400 square, maybe a little less, nothing huge, but it has all the stuff we need to pull through the outbreak, and we save space by having round the wall cupboarding and shelving which works with how the basement was poured and the house was built. You might want to put alot of plants down there, especially the kind that don't need alot of light or water, but still give off decent amounts of oxygen and help clean up the air.

For you guys that are young, why don't you take the issue to your folks in a more sensical way by substituting zombie apocalypse for epidemic or outbreak, or simple disaster preparedness? Just ask them if something like that happened would you be safe? Are you ready in case help cannot immediately find you, or society crumbles and people go nuts looting and pillaging? And even if the home is not yours, there are measures you can take to make parts of the home more secure without getting your parents choked at you.

I am also considering putting bars up on my windows in the rooms that have one window that is small. My living room and kitchen have large windows, but the laundry room, the bedroom, and the computer room all have one small normal sized window. If the windows had bars the rooms themselves become a much better place to be. All you have to worry about is the one door. And all rooms have doors, except the living room and the kitchen which are joined. And of course every room has weapons on the wall, or in the corner, and the basement is where all the emergency supplies are mainly stored.

Oh yeah, and get your asses some SARS masks. Japan is having an outbreak, Canadian birds have been testing positive for flu and being put down, so get some masks and get used to goin out with them on. Better safe than sorry, and they are not expensive at all. I'll take one of those over a vaccine anyday thanks.  Wink

I have a place in a small town in the mountains, low population which is a plus, backyard opens right to thr Rocky Mountains. Rivers very close to house for fresh water, no shortage of live game for food. A very large stockpile of gassoline and propane nearby. For supplies I have tons of fishing supplies, compound bows for hunting (quiter and saves ammo for the pus bags!) A generator for your own power is a necessary. I also have a crude chemistry set and lots of recipies and supplies for your own homeade explosives. The house has a solid basement (although we all kow what happens if you get trapped there "night of the living dead"!), but alot of large windows, great veiw but I have a way to seal the area. You can build a temporary wall (20+ if need be!) out of concrete forms, useing steel and ties will keep it sturdy to a small horde till you pour the concrete and then its a fortress!!

I doubt I will be at my house when the day comes.Well, stay long.If I'm alone, then I'll be in my attic. It's small, but it will have to do.If I have some people with me,we'll destroy all the stairs in the house. The front, the back and the basement. We should be safe then.If things get out of hand,I will most likely be running to my cousin's apartment or my friend's house, which is three stories.

But if I get the money and time,I can try and make my shelter safer. But I don't have any plans yet. (and very little money)If all else fails,I'll keep moving.

Well, my grampa and grama died a year ago, and left the house to mom, so when/if the zompocalipse happens, ill go there, (but im only 14, so hotwiring will be kinda important).  It is an awesome house, 3 levels (attic, basement, first floor).  The basement has 1 entrance, like this hatch in the floor.  Reinforce it and boom, instant shelter.  Only bad part is that it is a log house, but if i destroy the stairs, only 1 little window (2 X 3) is possible to get in/out.  Grampa was a big hunter, so he left all his guns,  and he was a cop so kevlar vest.  Yeah. Cool
