Yeah, I know the 30-30 Winchester was made in top breaks, revolvers!, bolt actions and probably a pump or semi but can't recall right now. Thumper and I were referring to stereotypes (read a few posts back). Another one about lever actions is that a straight stock is a "Winchester" or "Winchester stock" and a curved, pistol grip stock is a "Marlin" or a "Marlin stock". Even though both companies produced both types, normally with the 2 types being available on the same model. This one probably arose when Marlin stopped making straight stocked 336's.

I convinced a coworker to take up shooting as a hobby.  He told me today he was going to look at getting a 9mm so I suggested the XDm. I'm hoping he gets it so I... um we can take it to the range and test it out.  Right now he's just waiting on his fbi bg check to clear... seems he ran into a glitch today. I'm sure they were having some kind of computer error since he had no problems buying a .22 pistol 2-3 days ago.

SWEEEET! Most of the XDM's I've seen thus far are overpriced, although I've seen a few at decent prices. I did handle one at a pawnshop the next county over, and if it would have been a 40S&W in black with a stainless slide I would have put it in layaway (that's the particular model I've decided on, 40S&W because I don't have on, black frame and stainless slide for the simple reason that I think it looks cool [ I know, how "tactical" of me{I hate that word}], the one they had was all black in 9mm). I liked the way it felt at least, but 600 bucks is a lot of money ( at least to my broke @ss), so I'd like to at least get the model I want. Being a Springfield they feel pretty much like a 1911, with similar controls too. Let us know how it feels, functions and recoils compared to a 1911 with old hardball.

I finally got a chance to shoot my buddy's XDm 9 the other day. It was a lot more accurate than my little Hi Point C9 (of course, it was more than 4x the price). It was a decent pistol, and it will be even better if the price of 9mm ever comes back down. or if you can even find cheap target ammo.
when you've got 19 rounds in a mag, it's really easy to go through several boxes before you know what happened. the magazine speed loader that comes with it isn't bad once you get the hang of it either. it definitely makes loading those mags less of a pain in the thumbs.
i still think that if i ever pick up an xdm, it's gonna have to be in .40... unless they come out with an XDm in .45acp (not an XD).

WWWHHOOOOO! Great to be back after technical difficulties. Great to hear a range report from you too OldNick. The fact that the XDM was a LOT more accurate than the Hi Point really impresses me. All Hi Point pistols are ugly, feel cheap like they may fall apart when you're just holding it (but they're really fairly tough), and they're heavy, and it's all in the slide and it makes 'em feel slightly awkward. But all I've ever shot (all calibers except the 40 S&W) have been accurate, especially after being shot quite a bit ( the bores seemed kind of rough on a couple at first, especially my brother's 45). Take note zombie survivalists on a budget, the Hi Point is inexpensive (all 4 models without lasers can be had for less than 200$ each), reliable, accurate and chambered in 380 ACP, 9mm Parabellum/Luger, 40 S&W and 45 ACP, all pretty common rounds, and until the outbreak as long as you can get it shipped back to the factory, the have the BEST warranty out there.
On the XDM 45, I've heard that's in development, I think it was in GUNLIST, but I'm not sure, but start a change jar or set aside a little each paycheck, I'm sure they'll put one out. Now, if we could just get one in 10mm, or ANY new pistol for that matter.

when i first got the hi point it seemed like it was accurate... it was probably the shooter rather than the gun this time. i was out of practice and it was the first time back at the range in a while.  unfortunately with the price/availability of cheap 9mm these days, it looks like it's gonna be a while before i take it back out. (i've got to save at least 2 boxes for z day!)  It's only slightly more expensive to shoot the 1911 and it fits my hand a lot better so it's more fun to shoot. (the bigger bang helps, as does the feel of cold steel in my hands rather than a polymer)

Price or availability of ANYTHING right now. I've been looking at airsoft and pellet guns as a cheaper, more available means to stay in practice. No kick so the kiddies can shoot all day and as a plus no earplugs or muffs are needed (keep the safety glasses on though).

I recently picked up a little walther bb-pistol. it's got a cycling action, and detachable magazines... these things have come a long way since I was a kid, that's for sure!

There's a writeup in a recent issue of the shotgun news about the makarov Air pistol being imported, and man, it actually looks pretty cool, and relatively cheap to shoot and stay in practice... of course, after getting one, I'd have to pick up a makarov so that I could have the real thing that the air pistol would be "practice" for  Grin

Yeah that's the good thing about the current market, you can get copies of most current autoloaders. Revolver fans are a bit left out. Rifle fans better like AR's and AK's as that's what most of the airsoft rifles are. But you still need trigger control as much if not more (some triggers on bb guns are stiff!), proper breathing and steady hands. I have a Daisy CO2 pistol that's a copy of a 2nd gen Smith. I guess I'll have to track one of those down, or settle for a 3rd gen and fill the 40S&W gap in my collection since they're the same size.

Well, I finally took the plunge and put an XD(M) 40 S&W in layaway. I could have probably ordered one and come out 50 dollars cheaper, but the local place lets me do the layaway deal, and I did get the stainless slide for the price of the all black version (I'm a REALLY good customer). I'll be sure to write a review and tell everybody how it does when I finally pay it out (the suspense is killing me, I can barely wait).

Crimson King,

a potent (and affordable, and easy to maintain) anti-Zombie battery might consist of two rifles, one handgun, and one shotgun.

1.  the low-recoil, high volume of fire primary battle rifle: any quality variant of the AR-15.
2.  the bolt action "Stopper"; any caliber 375H&H or larger.  They can disjoint a Zombie at 200 yards.
3.  the handgun; preferably 40S&W or 45 acp.  The Para is a prime example, the P-16 is a sixteen shot in 40S&S.  Their P-14 is a 15 shot in 45 acp.  Either can be had in stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
4.  the shotgun; simple choice here.  The Remington 870 pump action in 12 gauge.  You can buy extra barrels, and extended magazine tubes that hold ten rounds of 3" magnum shells.  A 20" Deer model with rifle sights and an extended magazine is the cat's A$$!!

Then, start ammunition shopping.
