I think that trying to pick just one gun would be daft, since any well equipped zombie team has a well rounded assortment of guns, each for their specific purpose. There's no single gun that is the end all weapon against zombies. You've got to find weapons and team members that compliment each other.

I totally think Sventhwarrior is right and no one gun is perfect. I also have saw many discussions like this on other sites and they almost always erupt into a flame war.
That said a 9mm Parabellum semi auto carbine would be pretty good.
 Light weight,
 cheap, easily available ammunition,
 little to no recoil,
 short overall length,
 relatively powerful,
 fast reloads,
 high capacity (depending on model).
easier to learn to use and more accurate than a pistol

Cons would be
Lack of range compared to rifle calibers
Lack of capacity as compared to ARs and AKs
Lack of strength, most are plastic stocked
Lack of power compared to rifles
Longer and more awkward than a pistol for CQZC (Close Quarters Zombie Combat)
Heavier and more awkward to carry than a pistol.

But my personal taste is a lever action 357 Magnum. It has a lower capacity, very slow reload time, but a slightly more powerful cartridge, longer range and tougher construction for hand to hand since there isn't a piece on the thing not steel or hard wood. Neither is perfect, far from it. But I feel they would be a good compromise.

from my personal collection, it would be a tough choice between my hi point 9mm pistol and my .357 revolver. the 9 is quicker to load and has a higher capacity, and while it is reliable on the target range, most autos will eventually run into a feeding/jam issue.

now, if i had time to grab something from the local sporting goods store, i'd probably grab a ruger 10/22 (carbine model).

Crossbow for two reasons. The first being that it's the only gun I own, (Yes, I'm aware it's not, but under local law, it's a firearm, and I do have it licensed as a rifle.) and the second reason because it packs a punch, shoots fast, and ammo isn't hard to find or make. If I have to, I'll load it with a rock, and keep reloading.

just one gun. hmmm well i like the crossbow idea caz of the ammo avalbility, caz not only is it easy to find and can be made but also can be removed from zombleis that have alseady been eliminated. but for me it would be the 12 gauge but only caz of its quick and easy reload and ammo can be found almost any where.

That's the reason I've been looking for a good used Mossberg 835 or preferably 535. A 12 Gauge slide action that take 2 3/4, 3 inch and 3 1/2 inch magnums. Got a good shotgun to do all I need to do right now, but if I find one at the right price I may have a new do all zombie gun (and turkey and deer and squirrel and coyote and, oh, all right I'll quit typing).

I enjoy a good scattergun as much as anyone, but not for my one and only.  I have two issues with it as a primary weapon.  One is obviously effective range.  Second, have any of you ever tried to carry a large quanity of shotgun shells?  Even with a extended mag tube, 9 rounds is hi cap for a shot gun.  Reloading isn't really a speedy thing either, even with practice.

For my family's safety, I'll bring my AR carbine if I only get one firearm.  30 round magazines are everywhere and are quick to change out, plus you have plenty of range to keep the undead at bay.
