 Well, on the Gerber front I've read some reviews where people had trouble getting defective items replaced, but only a couple. Every company seems to have issues with customer service from time to time, so caveat emptor.
 I have found out that SOG's tools are customizable. On their website you can order specific parts and change them out yourself

this gives you the ability to create your own tool within certain limits, although it will be slightly pricier.
