You have been on vacation for a week at the beach. Gruesome murders have started occurring in your vacation area and the nation is in belief that there is some sort of cult demonstration based on how destroyed the bodies are. You decided to end your vacation early and while packing your things to leave a popular radio host uses the word "undead" which turns the entire place into a larger frenzy than it already is in. You are now caught in the mass escape, which funny enough moves at next to zero MPH on the highway.

While the rest of the idiots on the road do not seem to have plan, you know where you are going. Your bug out location is a secluded area near your house. It's fully loaded for this situation, but sadly it is also still a 6 hour drive away from your vacation destination. Looking in the rear view mirror you see them working their way towards you, hundreds of slow walking undead peeling through the cars one by one killing anything they can get their hands on. People are beginning to get out of their cars and run, the screams of those behind you are getting close... you need to act.

Here is where you find yourself.
Gridlock on the highway, a 6 hour drive (330 miles at 55mph) from your bug out location.
Your car is trapped on the highway.
You have whatever you had with you on your beach vacation.

What moves do you make in order to ensure you and your family's survival? What steps do you take to make the trip to your safe house?

First thing is get the pistol out of my luggage and put it on my hip if it's not there already. I would take a change of clothes and anything else that may be of use. Then take to the hills. I would try to stay close enough to the road to follow it to my destination. I would stay as clear of other people and zombies as possible, if I found an area of clear roads I would carefully sneak down and see if it still had keys in it, if so I would take it as far as possible.

Well you would think an area with clear roads wouldn't have a car with keys in it. These people would probably keep driving until they ran out of gas or were out of the area.

I imagined they would probably be in clusters and maybe some of the ones up front could be used until I got to the next cluster and couldn't move around them, but you never know how the layout would be though.
Also the thing you said about them being out of gas would be more true and I hadn't given it much thought.
Most people at the front of the pack would drive on through until they ran out of gas or ran into some sort of obstruction.
Then you have the two groups that are stuck in gridlock and can not move forward at all.
The calmer thinking ones would most likely take their keys with them, so they could come back later and take their car.
The ones that panic would likely take off, leaving the door open and the engine running, not only leaving the tank empty but also the battery dead.
So either way I think you're right, I wouldn't be able to use the cars. Even if I found a few with a clear patch of road in front of it, no gas, no keys or no battery would leave me with no luck.

I think the Zombies would be moving fairly slowing they keep stopping for snacks along the way.  Grap what useful stuff out the car/truck/suv (whatever I'm in).

Climb into the back of the rednecks super 4x4 which always seem to be around and take the thing off road driving around traffic until I can get clear.

*Sorry if I offeneded anyone with the redneck comment*

K. First. Grab weapon. What, I'm not very picky about. Hell, grab beach umbrella out of the back of my mom's Van. Hop on hood. Start running, keeping high where ever I can. This is where you hope that you get a string of cars. You might have to break stride a couple times to climb up a vehicle, but the key thing is, don't slow down.

When outside my house I almost always have a handgun strapped to my hip. I would definatly have one if on the road, so w weapon would be covered. After exiting the car I'd open the trunk and grab my emergency kit (a few days food and water, emergency blanket, and ammo), my CLS bag and either the shotgun or M1 carbine, whichever is in the trunk at the time. Then I'd head for the hills, making my way home overland or find alternate transportation beyond the gridlock.

As this is a vacation, I will assume the position in a worst-case scenario. Meaning, I have very little to no survival supplies. In this situation, I would first take a moment or two to compose myself enough to think straight. Secondly, I will have to improvise. Many cars normally carry everyday items that can be easily be transformed into weapons. Maybe not the best, but still doable. Perhaps a metal envelope opener in the glove compartment. Or a belt. Remember, other humans will be a bigger threat than the undead at this time. So your improvised weapon does not have to be fancy. I would exit my vehicle, and take the keys with me, just in case. I will empty my luggage bag of anything not related to survival and throw it over my shoulder. If the the interstate or highway I'm on is on the ground and not an overpass, I will get off of it and either stick to raised up side and follow the highway that way, or head to the nearest secluded area(depending on exactly how far I'm from the most urbanized area). If it is an overpass, many people will be jumping over cars, crawling, doing what ever they can to rush. I will make haste, but I won't rush. I will get to the very side of the overpass witch will either have a fence or a concrete barrier and follow the edge of it until I reach a clear exit ramp or the end of the overpass. From here I will try to stay away from the other humans. And stay quiet. I guarantee that there will be zero clear roads, all will be choked with stagnant vehicles. Unless of course you're talking about back roads. Basically, nearly all of my journey will be on foot. It sounds impossible, and it probably is, but it will more than likely be my only chance. If chance favors me and I'm lucky enough to find a clear straight-away road with maybe a couple vehicle with one with gas and a good battery(Fat-chance lol). Then I will definitely take advantage of it. But unless that happens. I'm on foot.

Agreed. I'm more likely to try and stick to the high ground if I can. This means using terrain to my advantage, and using cars as stepping stones.
