Lets say you come across one of the first zombies. No one knows of the outbreak but there are witnesses watching this crazed man chase and attempt to bite people.

Do you kill him and face the fact that you may be brought in for murder and jailed when the outbreak occurs (pretty much guaranteeing your death), or do you walk away and let him bite whomever and letting who knows how many get infected.

First off, call the police. Tell them the situation. Depending on your current physical and mental condition, training, and whether or not you're armed would all contribute to what action you choose next.

It's weird, I had this thought a few days ago.  I was sitting at the Golden Corral with my family, and it just kinda hit me.  I started envisioning what would happen if a zombie busted in the dining area. I thought about how I might react.  Of course, I had my 1911 on my hip, but only 1 magazine.  I wondered if 8 rounds would get my family out the door to my truck, and the few blocks to my house and the rest of my guns and ammo.  I never even though about the police, because I would be focused on getting my wife and daughter home safe.  Waiting around for johnny law to show up didn't make the list.  Then I started wondering what if I just went crazy, and the person I smoked turned out not to be a zombie at all.  Heavy stuff.  I did get the feeling that I should buy more ammo for the house, and start carrying more on me.  It would have to be pretty darn obvious that it was the real deal before I clear leather.  You never know, it could just be somebody filming a movie, or some stupid reality show.

That's why I have given serious consideration to carrying a smaller caliber. If 9mm Parabellum rounds are (roughly) half the weight of 45 ACP, I could carry twice as many. I do worry about effectiveness of smaller rounds though, what if I have to use twice as many shots (or more) to stop a living or undead attacker?

You never know, it could just be somebody filming a movie, or some stupid reality show.

I had never thought of that, but it brings up a really good point. You would think the people doing this stuff would have enough sense to tell people about it (at least everyone not being pranked).

I also carry my Sig 226 in 9mm once in a while.  Having 15 rounds of Hornaday Critical Defense is nice.  I have a Serpa magazine holder, but rarely use it due to the added bulk of the double stack mag and OWB design.  I don't carry the Sig as much since I only have about 400 rounds through it, versus 5000+ rounds through my Kimber.  My decision is based solely on trigger time.  A Sig 226 or 229 in .40, and a 220 in .45 are on my very long gun wish list.

I never feel under gunned with a 9mm.  Modern expanding bullet design has gone a long way to close the gap between calibers.  In the end it all boils down to shot placement.  I'm confident in my ability to make an incapacitating hit on a human target.  If a clean headshot doesn't do the trick, I got nothing.

Have you ever seen the news shows they were doing?  I think it was "What Would You Do?"  They had hidden cameras and actors playing out different scenarios to see if ordinary people would intervene.  Seemed like a bad idea to me.  I think it was a Dateline series.  The saddest thing to me is that fewer and fewer people these days demonstrate common sense.  Fewer yet show common decency or a sense of civic duty.  I was amazed how many people choose to stand by and watch, or ignore the situation alltogether.

I don't watch a lot of TV, and that's one of the shows I missed. Scare Tactics on SyFy is one I have watched and I don't know how they haven't gotten someone shot. There was one where they were playing a prank on this guy and the male actor was playing a psycho and it was implied he was about to drag the female actor off and slay her. They guy they were playing the prank on clocked the guy in the jaw when he grabbed the woman.
I read something else the other day that made me sick. Bill Nye (The Science Guy) tripped or passed out (possibly both, hard to understand from the story), and rather than anyone trying to help the guy - they all started updating their Twitter and Facebook about the incident. I used to watch Bill Nye The Science Guy every Saturday morning as a kid, it's disgusting that something like this would happen to anyone, let alone one of my heroes. There was another story or two of similar things (one was a murder) further down, here's the link. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101117/sc_yblog_thelookout/if-the-science-guy-passes-out-and-nobody-tweets-it-did-it-happen

People won't last long when the zombies come if that's what our society has come to.

If I recognized the threat as a real zombie I'd probably keep me distance and observe then escape run home call my group while loading up the guns  Grin

If it was just a nutball in a restaurant I would either attack the assailant or duck cover and escape depending on if I was alone or not.

When I 1st read about the Bill Nye incident I was outraged then deeply saddened but then I read it happened in Southern Calif. and I was like oh yeah makes complete sense Roll Eyes parts of So Cal really suck!
