There's been a bit of activity on the 6x6 thread so I figured this might do well too. What vehicles do you think could be modified for good general purpose or specific task vehicles.
I think a school bus is one of the most obvious and versatile. I think my favorite purpose I've ever thought up would be modifying a full size bus into an evacuation vehicle. Put steel or aluminum grating over the windows ( I chose grating over thick plates to preserve vision and conserve weight), a cattle catcher on the front and you're good to go. The newer ones with the escape hatches on the roof would allow for a place to shoot from ( a turret would be nice, if slightly unrealistic). Depending on how large a colony you were evacuating, you could take out a few seats to allow room to sleep, I figure you may be living in it for a while as you search for a new place to settle.

We also have a thread for unmodified vehicles

Now, me and my now fully boosted bike (Yes, I got the boosters working better, to make them not one-shots), we can outrun almost anything short of a formula one racer. It can handle offroad kinda. I'd have to swap out tires. Bonus, with the saddlebags and the tank bag, I can carry everything I currently own with me. Downside is that I can only really do one passenger. Although, at cruising speeds, it would make an excellent scavenger vehicle. Ride alongside a cluster of zombies, and give the passenger a shotgun. Or explosives. If I could find a way to mount a tripod on there, without the recoil tipping the bike, I'd do that.

I like the idea of a bus for mass transport/ living quarters.  I think you may run into the issue of maneuverability again due to it's wheelbase and height.  If you had a fullsize pickup or two for gun trucks/ scouts, it would help a lot.  You could use the smaller rigs to find or clear you a path.  You could park the bus and use trucks or SUVs to get around in towns, saving your mothership from becoming stuck or damaged.  I'd liken it to a carrier escort of sorts.

That sounds like a really good idea with the bus and the trucks. A tow truck might even be handy for clearing wreckage.

the idea of a bus sounds good, my only concerns would be fuel consumption and entry points. to my knowledge most busses are designed to open from the outside as well as the inside, if you could engineer a way to stop unwanted intrusion it would be near perfect. you could use the roof as a raised shooting platform as well as an egress route, buses seem to have plenty of power and torque, and who doesnt like yellow...lol

The fuel consumption would be bad, it's not likely that very many gas stations will still be open after Z-Day. The doors I don't thin would be too hard to fix, but keeping out a determined psycho would be harder than keeping out a hungry zombie, and I'm betting on nearly as many psychos as zombies.
Maybe I need a monkey and a big yellow hat to match the big yellow bus.
