I've been, over the last few weeks, helping a friend prepare for the impending doom of the Zombie invasion. Since he's just started preparing, and I did all of the initial prep work several years ago, it's been an eye opener remembering all of the little details about setting up a Z-Day contingency plan.

A few tips for the newly initiated:

Before you start buying things or re-enforcing your home, you need to have a good Z-Day plan.

Start with the basics and build from there:

Where are you likely to physically be when Zombies come looking for you?
      a. Is this place defensible?
If Not, do you have a more defensible position at your disposal?

      b. Do you have space to store your food and other supplies that it will be
protected? (basement or indoor closet = good, tool shed in the back yard = not so
          good.)

      c. what natural resources do you have at your disposal
      etc.

What do you already own that could be an asset to your survival?

Will you be defending just yourself, or will there be others for you to keep in mind in an outbreak?

Will you seek out other survivors for help and numbers? (and if so, what of your goods and equipment will you be willing to donate to the group to help?)

How long will you make preparations for? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? (The answer to that question can greatly change the level and type of prep you'll be doing)

What is your budget for preparation?

(hopefully others can chime in with their own questions to add to the list, so we can make a complete "what should you ask yourself before getting started" page)

Most online and B&M retailers (and wholesalers) are running out of things that we would like to see available right now, for instance, there isn't a store within 100 miles of here that could provide me with more than 100 large pistol primers, or any .380 auto ammo (among others things.) So the idea of stocking up seems to have swept the nation, at least pertaining to some things. you need to decide what you need, and how much of it you need, and when it becomes available, get as close to meeting your procurement goal as supplies and finances permit.

Consider taking up a hobby, and consider making that hobby something that will be useful in the collapse of society. (Reloading, the hunting/cleaning/cooking of small game, or maybe even start making clothing for yourself)

The list of things to share could go on and on, but for now, it's late, I'm tired, and I have a lot of work to do, but I should be back soon with more posts about getting started
