The straight stick in my opinion is one of THE styles to have. If you train in anything, start with that. I use an english dagger style for straight stick, or english quarterstaff if it's long enough, but whatever works. It's one of the most versatile weapons around. Omni-directional impact head, meets availability, meets practicality.

 That's probably the biggest reason to train with those.
